ABERGAVENNY & MONMOUTH
SATURDAY AUGUST 7th 2027
A day out in Welsh Border country.
First, it’s off to Abergavenny which is known as a "Gateway to Wales"; it is approximately only 6 miles from the border with England. This is a charming Welsh town with a Castle and Museum for any local history lovers. There are the beautiful Linda Vista Gardens in the town which are full of rose gardens and rockeries. The town centre has plenty of independent shops, coffee shops and restaurants and has regular markets. From here we will be travelling to the pleasant historic market town of Monmouth on the river Monnow just near the Welsh border. This town has an ancient history, being at one time the capital of Wales. The Romans were here and so were the Normans. They built a castle, now mostly a ruin, and a fortified bridge, (the famous Monnow Bridge) which is the only one left in Britain. There are connections, too, with Lord Nelson, who stayed in the town and Charles Royce, aviation and motoring pioneer. So, look out for the Nelson Museum in Priory Street, (free admission) and the Charles Royce statue outside the town hall.
We will leave and Albrighton, Crown bus shelter at 7.45am and Trinity Methodist Church, Codsall at 8.00am returning by about 6.30p.m. Cost is £35
